I went with a friend to see the last Rocky movie on wednesday. It was nice to see the old slugger again, but even tho the effects were improved and the acting was better, I think I had a much better time watching the first ones. For one, there isn't as much building up excitement here. There's only 1 fight, and a whole lot of drama. Stalone makes a passable shot at being a character actor, but in the end, there's too much 'old boxer's wisdom'. His reenactment of the head traumas an old boxer has experienced is a bit too realistic for my liking. The end fight is great tho, and I guess it's still worth seeing.
Olga and I went to the movies tonight, to see The Departed. We'd seen a trailer for it when we went to see the norwegian movie Fritt Vilt, so we had pretty high hopes. The film has a star-specked cast, with Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead. I guess we'll just have to get used to Leo not being synonymous with chick-flicks anymore. He's doing a really solid piece of acting in this one.
I didn't know it when I watched it, but the movie is based on a Hong Kong movie called Infernal Affairs. With it Boston setting and lots of references to Irish immigrants, it really feels like an American Hollywood movie (But not in a bad way). The soundtrack is great as well, and helps build the mood of the movie.
This movie is all about rats. Not the kind that eats cheese, the spy kind. Nicholson plays an aging crime lord, and the other two plays an undercover cop and a plant in the police department. I'm not going to give away the plot, but you can assume lots of paranoia and lots of action. It's a long movie, at a little over 2.5 hours, but it didn't feel that way. Scorsese keeps the suspense up all through the movie, and the ending is pretty great too. This is a definitive must see movie.
Warning: Do not waste money seeing this movie in the cinema. It's barely on the level of a TV production, technically, and it doesn't really have much to do with the 80s TV series either. The plot is incoherent and stupid, and the acting is dreadful. The only highlight was the soundtrack, which is worth checking out.
